Submission by Emma Skellern to the 'Inquiry into Mental Health and Addiction'

Updated: Sep 1, 2018

What isn’t working well at the moment? What mental health and addition needs are not currently being met? Who isn’t receiving the support they need and why? What is not being done now that should be?

Currently there is a serious over-reliance on psychiatric medication as the main treatment method for addressing most mental health problems. In my view, medications enable symptom management but what is actually required is investigation in to the causes of these behaviours/emotional responses and to then apply the therapeutic solutions that address these underlying causes.

The effectiveness of psychiatric medication has been a point of debate in the literature for some time now and recently expert opposition to widespread use of psychiatric medication has grown stronger.
